I came very close to going with my husband to the mountains yesterday, but I’m so glad I DIDN’T.
He took a young guy from our community on the long trek to get pumpkins to sell on our farm. I’m sure this kid is wishing he didn’t go …
I received a call from hubby when he arrived. He was shocked to discover that the ELECTRICITY had been OFF for several days (nobody knows how long)!
You can only imagine what this did to the food in the fridge/freezer … blech! He said the smell was RANCID. My yummy Weight Watcher fudge bars had melted and become a sticky goo outside of the freezer and had oozed under the fridge as well. Lovely!
Poor “Boaz” had to clean all of that mess up.
I have a very sensitive nose and can smell the least offensive odor a mile a way. Ha. I would have been gagging for sure!
At 10:30pm, Appalachian Power finally made their way to our house and discovered some type of fuse blown at the transformer. All is well now — except the SMELL is still there.
Boaz placed Arm & Hammer Baking Soda and some lemon slices in the fridge over night, but still … very stinky.
I found some other treatments on the Internet and he was going to try some of them before he hit the road. WHO KNOWS what I will face when I go back to the house after October 31st!
In the event you have a stinky fridge, you may want to try some of these helpful hints:
Clean fridge then place baking soda & slices of oranges inside to absorb odors.
Wipe down the inside of freezer/fridge with Vanilla extract & water combo.
Open a bag of charcoal and leave in the bottom of the fridge for a few days.
Leave coffee in the fridge to absorb odors.
Soak charcoal in vinegar then place them in the fridge.
Any of you have something different to offer? I may have to try these at the end of this month.
Peeeeee – ewwwww!
Dwight says I can smell a you-know-what before it even comes out so I'm right there with you on the sensativity & gagging. I hope baking soda and lemons will over time help but I've never had luck with baking soda in the refrigerator. I still keep it there for some reason.
Wow,,Beth.. I never have heard of the charcoal one.. that is interesting..
well Im sure by the time you get there in Oct,, it will be smelling much better..but just look at all the work you got out of by not going.. and Im sure your hubby did a good job..
You certainly were spared Beth! Ewwww….. that would have freaked me out. I just this morning threw out something in my fridge that I have no clue what it was originally. Now that is scary! Blessings.
Those are some great tips! I have just started my own weight loss journey and am going to read some more of your blog.
What an awesome guy!!! Doesn't sound like fun, but glad it is something that can be taken care of!!!
Sorry for the problems sis, thanks for the helpful tips.
Blessing in disguise for you! I hope you'll find something that will work! Love and blessings.
Ugh, what a mess! I use vinegar & baking soda. Good luck!
Hugs & love,
Mimi
I have a sensitive nose, too. Bill calls me "Radar Nose"! lol
Your ideas for removing odors are all good ones…I hope they work!
Oh, hate that happened!! I don't have a "sensitive" nose per se, but do have a keen smell….
Hopefully by the time you head back, it will be "odor-free"!!
~Beth
Great de-odorizing ideas!
Oh my gosh, I cannot imagine. This would have sent me over the edge. It's worse than ants! But you shared some great tips here!
oh girl that is no fun. So sorry. i am smell sensitive too. Hope the odor goes away quickly.
From another sensitive nose, I pray the remedies relieve the stench…
So Sorry this happened Beth, had a similar experience this summer with a freezer going off, it has fish in it. i thought i would never get that odor out. lol.
Thanks for all the tips, though I hope I don't ever have use .lol
Blessings,
Sue
Huh, I've never heard of using charcoal or coffee to absorb odors. Great tips!
Bicarb is great yes although I'd use lemon as it disinfects. Cheese also absorbs odours, weird i know but i always use it when my Step dad leaves an onion in the fridge.
Yuck! That sounds like a mess! I hope you guys were able to get the odor out!
