Yesterday after breakfast, the young Princess and I began our adventure in the garden — picking corn.
It was a typical NC hot summer day. July flies (well, that is what I call them) were singing and filling the humid air with noise.
I was in the garden picking corn and tossing it on the ground for Princess to gather.
Please take the time to watch this youtube of my daughter whining as she was forced (such a mean Mom) to shuck some corn. You can hear the July flies. I love it! This is what a NC summer sounds like. Welcome to my yard.
Oh, I love corn!! And yours is so pretty!! We've got some silver queen but it has not yet reached the point to be able to pick it yet! Loved the video….and of course those wonderful and special NC sounds in the background!

The corn looks delicious. Bless her heart, enjoyed the video.
Wish I could grow corn like that!
3 words- child. labor. laws. lol
Loved the video! She is such a cutie!
We had to watch twice just so Andrew could see the airplane and John Deere!! That corn looks great but I agree with The Princess – I do NOT like shucking or silking.
I got tired just watching your daughter shuck that corn! But could you send some to NJ? I love corn. I was born on a farm [in Michigan] and my grandparents raised corn on their farm in Ohio. I'm a corn girl from way back too!!
You call the Cicada a July Fly? I have never heard of that but we have them here too!
In July – we will hear those same sounds.
Blessings for your summer!

So funny that she doesn't like it. She is too cute. That corn is looking wonderful!!
Beth, your little girl is going to have so many mama stories when she gets older. I love how you share with her all the time. You're a good mama Beth.
Even though she doesn't enjoy shucking corn, she is still obedient. 🙂 That's a tough job but someone's got to do it.
Hugs,
Debbie
My little girl actually like shucking corn…my boys on the other hand is whole new different story. Love the post!!
Now I know what its like in NC! I don't like flies! Your daughter is darling though. The ending of the video was cute too. 🙂
Hi Beth,
Enjoyed your post! The corn looks delicious!!
Have a great day!
Hugs
Bless her heart! I use to love shucking corn and snapping beans… etc. We call those bugs cicadas. I have never heard of them called July flies. I use to play with their shells too!
