This morning I dropped off my precious Princess at her daycare around 8:30am and headed towards Walgreen’s to pick up 70 envelopes that they cheated me in my Christmas card order. :o) As I pulled up to the stop light, it was red. I stopped, looked to the left to see if traffic was coming so I could turn right. Suddenly I heard a horn beeping. It was the horn of a little car. Of course, I start looking around to see why someone was beeping. I finally noticed some dude behind me in a little blue car (I drive a big red Suburban). He was waving his hands, throwing a FIT. I then noticed I had a green arrow allowing me to turn right. Ok, the arrow must have turned in the exact moment I looked left. This guy actually slowed me down by honking his horn like a freak. I didn’t sit there for more than 3 seconds.
I quickly threw up my hands and waved, “I’m sorry” and punched it. Then the more I thought about it, the angrier I got. I started, “Stupid Jerk!” thoughts in my mind. I slowed down so that he could get next to me (lol … why?) so that I could get a good look at him. He wouldn’t look in my truck, but pouted as he passed me. The back of his car was covered in Obama stickers and “Hope” … blah, blah, blah. Being the wonderful Christian that I am, I immediately thought, “No wonder he was such a jerk!” (Sorry Obama friends.) Suddenly I was convicted. I repented for calling this man a jerk. The Holy Spirit is faithful to reign me in when my flesh is getting the best of me.
I also realized how impatient I am in traffic sometimes too. There are many times when I am saying to myself, “Oh come on lady! Move it!” Though most of us Southerners don’t “HONK” our horns … my thoughts are just as bad. I even had someone cut me off in traffic this afternoon. I had to slam on brakes to avoid hitting her, but I didn’t honk my horn. lol I was much more gracious after my earlier conviction!
So … the next time you get the urge to “rage” in traffic, remember that we all need GRACE. That man could have been late for work. Maybe he had a fight with his wife before he left. Maybe he just isn’t a nice person who really does need Jesus. Who knows, but I pray God blesses him.
Proverbs 14:29 A patient man has great understanding, but a quick-tempered man displays folly.
Proverbs 15:18 A hot-tempered man stirs up dissension, but a patient man calms a quarrel.
Proverbs 16:32 Better a patient man than a warrior, a man who controls his temper than one who takes a city.
Ephesians 4:2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.
1 Thessalonians 5:14 And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone.
Ha! I have done that before and then realized that the person honking was someone I knew who just wanted to say HI!!!!
D, that happened to me once – she was tailgating me and honked and waved hello as I turned onto another road. I realized I knew her AFTER I made an obscene gesture, but I don’t think she saw it. The next time I saw her, she said, “didn’t you see me waving at you?” I lied to her and pretended I hadn’t. She never said anything about what I did. That was many, many years ago, but still. 🙂
Why yes, I am very familiar with road rage…I live near a big city, where they do honk! I miss the south…
Bless…
yaaaay! i am not alone!
thanks for being transparent!
Hilarious! Living in London the roads are usually covered with testosterone, not as bad as in Greece or Italy!
When I was a driver in my twenties I used to be terribly competive ‘against’ males, especially in my driving. (the worst was getting the Merc I was driving onto two wheels cornering to sharply, as I was in a chase ‘against’ a male driver) I guess geting older, being in my mid 50’s I have mellowed down, a bit.
I sure enjoyed reading your honest and candid post!
I can totally relate! People can be so rude. I remember calling someone a jerk once and I heard my then-three year old repeat the word. I am always praying for God’s grace when I drive because I need His help to be patient.
